Lombok EcoVillage

Design Collaboration with SOG design

We imagined the tourism on Lombok, Indonesia, with a sustainable, community-focused design inspired by the Alupag fruit. The micro home combines traditional Sasak architecture with modern sustainable practices, harmonizing with the natural landscape. Embracing wabi-sabi, the design integrates aging and imperfection, blending seamlessly with its surroundings.

The structure, made from local materials like bamboo and ironwood, forms an eco-village that fosters resource sharing and social bonds. This design aims to boost local economic well-being by involving the community in construction, promoting traditional methods, and encouraging sustainable living, ultimately enhancing Lombok’s tourism and prosperity.

Drawing inspiration from the Alupag fruit, known for its hard shell and resilient growth pattern, the micro home are designed to protect against the elements.

The design draws from Sasak architecture — with its steep, sculptural rooflines that naturally ventilate and cool — while standing lightly on the land. Raised on stilts, each home minimizes impact on the terrain, allowing the forest floor to breathe. It is a quiet collaboration between human dwelling and tropical ecosystem.

Inside, the micro home unfolds into a functional yet poetic space — elevated sleeping quarters, a compact kitchen, and natural textures create a cozy environment rooted in local craftsmanship. Light filters gently through the structure, revealing the beauty of imperfection and age. Designed for meaningful moments and connection, this interior reflects the spirit of wabi-sabi and the intelligence of minimalist living in harmony with nature.

The faceted walls open to invite light, air, and connection to nature. A seamless dialogue between interior and landscape, the space becomes a sanctuary for both stillness and shared presence — from mindful meals to silent moments. With elemental textures and geometric grace, it embodies sacred living in tropical balance.
