Recipient of numerous awards in Canada and internationally, BALNEA reinvents the art of relaxation by orchestrating an immersive experience where every detail becomes an ode to nature. Its contemporary design, seamless client journey, organic integration of the pavilions, and biophilic approach come together in a fluid multisensory experience, crafted within a refined ambiance that is both surprising and enveloping.
In 2003, Stéphanie Émond, co-founder of BE_MONDO, discovered an abandoned estate in the Eastern Townships. Nestled in the heart of a 400-acre private nature reserve, featuring an intimate lake and breathtaking views of the Appalachians, the site would become the birthplace of BALNEA. The spa’s first phase opened its doors in October 2005.
To bring her vision to life, Stéphanie collaborated with her friend Jean-Sébastien Bourdages, a young architect passionate about Quebec’s natural environment.
Together, they envisioned a place deeply rooted in the landscape, designed to welcome, inspire, and reveal both nature and humanity.
From its opening until 2020, Stéphanie led the many phases of development: the Treatment Haven, Beach Club, Tree Pavilion, Lake Sauna, West Terraces, and the construction of the new LUMAMI restaurant. For these projects, she collaborated notably with Sid Lee Architecture, Blouin Tardif Architecture, and VLAN Paysages.
Each space is a tribute to nature while placing the client experience at the heart of its creation. Every detail is thoughtfully designed to offer an immersive and heartfelt experience.
The choice of materials—primarily local, sustainable, and noble—is guided by a desire to transcend fleeting trends. Rather than following the fashions of the moment, every decision aims to prioritize durability, meaning, and harmony with the site.
Like a journey, at every step the visitor encounters architecture, nature, or details revealed from a fresh perspective. With each visit, the client rediscovers the place anew.
Custom furniture, lighting fixtures, artworks, immersive pathways… every element of the decor has been thoughtfully crafted with precision and sensitivity by Stéphanie Émond, or in collaboration with like-minded artists.
The carefully crafted treatment menu, developed over the years, draws inspiration from the world’s most prestigious beauty houses and Stéphanie’s travels across the globe—always guided by the desire to offer unforgettable rituals that transcend the definition of well-being to reach a state of ecstasy.
